Taoism or Daoism? Which expression is the appropriate one?

Hello to all.

I have recently delved back into the world religious talks since my life has settled once again.

I had a brief chat with a person from mainland China who spoke better Mandarin than English and confessed to following the path of Daoism -- the effortless path to truth.

During the chat, we discussed the comparative philosophies of Confucius and the great sage Lao-Tzu. Since I was accustomed to pronouncing Daoism as 'Taoism' in past conversations about religion, and had never actually had the opportunity to converse (face-to-face) with a foreign-born member of the Daoist community, I expressed a level of discomfort when using the term.

The person themselves never intervened or seemed offended nor bothered to correct the pronunciations, yet I could not help but think I might I have been mispronouncing the term. I never thought to ask, as the discussion was again... brief.

So to the audience here at Global Religions, what is your take on the usage of Daoism vs. Taoism? What have you observed about traditional dialects that would give credence to the use of one pronunciation over the other?
