What is Eishet Chayil?

Ruth the Moabitess and Convert

Did you know that each Friday, before the ceremonial and festive Shabbat ritual meal, many Jews throughout the world chant a poem to honor Jewish women?

This sacred poem, or song, is known as Eishet Chayil (spelled differently depending on translation). The name transliterates as "Woman of Valor."

This poem seeks to elevate the generosity, kindness, integrity, and honor of women, while minimizing the vainglorious aspects of beauty in accordance with Proverb 31:30.

This poem is believed to be inspired by a reference from the Book of Ruth, which tells the story of Ruth, her journey with Naomi, and marriage to Boaz. In the book, Boaz calls Ruth "Eishet Chayil," referring to her great valor and integrity.

What are your thoughts on this ceremonial poem honoring women of valor?
