Does Everything Require a First Cause?

The Newest Finding on the Expansion of the Universe | Answers in ...

As Billy Preston said in 1974: "Nothing from nothing leads to nothing. You gotta have something."

This logic seems rational since no effect occurs without a cause. Many theists have attempted to apply this logic to the universe and material existence. Suggesting that the origin is God. Thomas Aquinos argued:

"There is an efficient cause for everything; nothing can be the efficient cause of itself. It is not possible to regress to infinity in efficient causes. To take away the cause is to take away the effect. If there be no first cause then there will be no others. Therefore, a First Cause exists. That first cause is God."

However, there is a problem with this argument that seems to collapse in on itself. If nothing exists without an origin, then God has an origin as well. Some would argue that God is eternal and requires no origin. But couldn't that same logic be applied to the universe or existence itself?

  • Can we logically assert existence without origin? How can it be objectively proven?

  • If nothing exists without origin, how can the existence of God be explained without origin or infinite regress?
