Kerubs of Mesopotamia

The Kerubs or Cherubim are formerly the ancient guardians of the Mesopotamian Tree of Life. The Mesopotamian Tree of Life was a sizeable mystical tree which sprouted from the center of paradise itself.

The primordial waters or Apsu is believed to have flowed from its roots. This tree is also where the Egyptian, Kabbalistic, and Islamic Tree of Life conceptualizations originated.
The Kerub were frequently portrayed as upholding the thrones of kings and gods in Mesopotamian culture. Surprisingly, the Cherubim are directly related to and identical to the Sphinx in nature and appearance.

[I do apologize for posting Sphinxes with missing noses, but these sculptures were apparently defaced according to Vivant Denon and so none exist with noses anyplace in Egypt]
In the Jewish tradition, the Kerub are the four giant, winged creatures depicted in Ezekiel's vision, with each having four faces:
  • Lion
  • Bull
  • Fowl
  • Human

In the Christian religion, the four Cherubim (tetramorphs) represent four evangelist prophets of the New Testament [NT].

ㅤㅤIn indigenous ceremonial magic, the cherubim represent the active power of the Tetragrammaton and directors of the established signs of the zodiac. In the Kabbala, the Order of the Cherubim corresponds to the sphere of Chokmah.

ㅤㅤFurthermore, the familiar Renaissance artistic rendering of cute pudgy baby angels with tiny wings who are commonly called “cherubs” are technically Putti, a Roman pagan depiction of angels and corruption of the original Kerubim.
