In hoodoo, spiritual bathing is a great way to cleanse the physical and spiritual body. Spirit bathing is recommended whenever the person expects to encounter negativity, fatigue, depression, anxiety, and fear of any kind.
Spiritual baths can also be done following a negative experience to empower the self.
Spirit baths can be done with any number of washes and bath salts made with herbs and colors specific to the purpose of the bather. On occasion when I have done spirit baths, I have used mint to enhance the properties of the cleansing effects.
INGREDIENTS
Common ingredients to spiritual baths are:
- Hyssop
- Rosemary
- Rue
- Rock Salt
- Consecrated or Vinegar Water
- 1 tablespoon Florida Water Cologne
INSTRUCTIONS
The guidelines to spiritual bathing are as follows:
- Always bless the water by invoking a spirit of healing in a manner that is most meaningful to you before entering the tub.
- As you get into the tub, soak yourself from head to toe while naming or reciting your problem[s].
- Spend about 10 or 15 minutes soaking in the healing water for a ritual bath. You may meditate, visualize a resolution of your problem, sing, or sit silently. Do whatever feels comforting to you.
- As you let the water go down the drain, visualize your problems washing away. With the last drop of water say “Let it be so”.
- Always clean your tub with salt afterwards. Sea salt is best, though regular salt is fine. Also, be sure to clean any other objects used in the tub with saltwater.
These are important factors to remember when preparing a spiritual bath. Some of these are necessary; others are optional. As part of preparing spiritual baths, you may choose to light your favorite candle or incense to make the experience enjoyable and soothing.
Lastly, please remember to always take soap baths or showers before spiritual baths. This is important because once the spiritual bath begins, the use of soaps, oils, and other bathing products are off limits as they are believed to dilute the effects of the spiritual bath if used in conjunction with spirit bath items.
Moreover, try not to stay in the spiritual bath longer than a half an hour and then allow your body to air dry to absorb its full effect(s).
