In Buddhism, the key to attaining enlightenment and joy is to detach from earthly desires. To understand non-attachment is to understand the goal of Buddhism. This concept is conveyed through the Four Noble Truths.
The Four Noble Truths are (1) the truth of suffering, (2) the truth of the cause of suffering, (3) the truth of the end of suffering, and (4) the truth of liberation from suffering. Through these four truths, the person is liberated from suffering. The Four Noble Truths teach that most suffering is caused by attachment.
Attachment, along with ignorance and aversion/hatred, is known as the Three Poisons. The Three Poisons constitute the second Noble Truth. They are considered the cause of all suffering. It is through relinquishing the delusion and ignorance that fuel the attachment and the aversion/hatred that makes life so unsatisfying, that the Buddhist is liberated from suffering.
Thus, the ultimate reason the Buddhist detaches is to be liberated from suffering.
• How could attachment cause suffering?
• How might detachment end suffering?
